Jamie O’Hara has claimed that Jordan Henderson should have stopped Sadio Mane’s transfer to Bayern Munich from Liverpool, as he told Sky Sports News.
The ex-midfielder thinks Liverpool are making a ‘mistake’ in selling Mane and he is ‘amazed’ they have let such a pivotal player head for the exit door.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Reds announced on Twitter that their one-time Champions League winner has departed for the German champions and he leaves as a ‘club legend’.
Those in the Merseyside boardroom have already reacted because the all-action Luis Diaz arrived during the January transfer window, whilst Darwin Nunez joined for big-money before Mane’s exit was confirmed.
But, whilst there is a lot of promise coming with those players, it’s not going to be easy replacing the proven qualities, performances and goals of their Africa Cup of Nations winning star.
And former Tottenham man O’Hara thinks the Reds should have done more to stop their star man from leaving, alongside the club captain.
“I am amazed that they have allowed him to leave,” said O’Hara. “He is still an unbelievable player. He is still one of the best players in the world.
“I can’t believe they didn’t think about giving him the money that he deserves. When you are a top player and you are seeing players on £300k and £400k-a-week, even with those astronomical fees, Mane deserves to be on that money as well.
“If they aren’t going to pay him the money, then somebody else will. So, he needs to know his worth. Getting into his 30s, so it’s one more big contract for him. I think it’s a massive loss for Liverpool. He is almost irreplaceable. I know they have brought in Nunez. I think it’s a mistake Liverpool have let him go.
“I would be saying ‘Mane we need you’. We have been so successful, missed out on the quad last season, but they have to go again. If I was Jordan Henderson, then I would have been desperate to keep him at the football club. But when a player has had his head turned, and he doesn’t feel his valued enough, then it’s hard to stop someone from leaving.”
WILL MO SALAH FOLLOW SUIT?
Well, at least the Liverpool fans know that Mo Salah will be on board ahead of the new season, but there is still no movement regarding his new contract.
A lot feel that the club should have given Mane what he wanted and they should also break the wage structure for Salah.
It will become more apparent next season if it was right to stick with their principles, if Mane struggles in Germany and Liverpool continue on their way, then there will be less pressure to give Salah what he wants.
Equally, if there is some struggle from Jurgen Klopp’s side, whilst Mane thrives over at Bayern, then there will be more pressure to give the Egypt international what he wants because then there will be a fear that they would lose another key member of their team and suffer for it.
