Speaking on the Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast, Alasdair Gold has been discussing Tottenham’s transfer pursuits, and he’s mentioned James Maddison.
The Leicester City midfielder is reportedly on the north London club’s radar, but according to Gold, this will be a difficult deal to complete.
However, with Tottenham reportedly in the market for a creative midfielder, the journalist reckons that the Leicester star would be one to keep an eye on.
What’s been said?
Gold spoke about Spurs and their interest in Maddison.
“That’s the thing with the 3-5-2 it needs a more creative player in there as well. Kulusevski can play there, so maybe he could play there. There are other people, I know they like Lucas Paqueta, the Lyon midfielder that Newcastle have looked at. I think they’ve looked at him, he’s quite versatile as well,” Gold said.
“I know they’ve always liked James Maddison, it’s funny with James Maddison, I mentioned him in an article and people say ‘he’s rubbish’, but I don’t remember him being rubbish, 18 goals and 12 assists last season Maddison, I didn’t realise he scored that many goals.
“30 goal involvements, he’ll be difficult to get away, he has two years left on his contract and all the talk seems to be about staying at Leicester next season with everything I’ve seen him saying, so it’s a difficult one.”
Gold discussed Maddison with a switch to the 3-5-2 in mind, but perhaps Maddison could be an option in the front three as well.
He’s played on the left wing plenty of times for Leicester City, and according to CIES’ statistical profiling, Maddison is actually the most similar player to Kylian Mbappe in Europe’s top-five leagues.
It may be surprising, but the England international has the most similar technical profile to Mbappe when taking into account the 11 metrics used by CIES to profile players.
Mbappe, is a lightning-quick attacker who thrives on balls in behind, while Maddison is more of a string-pulling playmaker with a long-range strike in his locker.
However, the stats show that Maddison actually performs a number of similar actions to Mbappe on the pitch, so he could well be an option for Tottenham in their front three.
Antonio Conte loves a player who is versatile, and with Maddison able to play in the midfield or the attack, this would be a brilliant signing for Spurs.
