Jose Enrique has urged Aston Villa transfer target, Joe Gomez, to ‘sign a new contract’ at Liverpool, as he posted on his Instagram story.

The former left-back added that when Gomez was signed up by Liverpool as a fresh-faced teenager, he always knew that he was going to be a ‘top player’ – Enrique played with Gomez during the early stages of his Anfield career.

Villa have added Diego Carlos to their ranks this summer, with Steven Gerrard keen to bolster the club’s backline, as The Telegraph have claimed that the Midlands side are keen to sign Gomez.

On one hand, Gomez is playing for an elite team and competing for every trophy, however, he’s fallen down the pecking order under Jurgen Klopp, which has raised questions about his future.

Nonetheless, Enrique has made it clear that he wants Gomez to pen down a new contract, as he labelled the 25-year-old as a ‘top player’.

“What a player and what a man,” said Enrique. “I was with him in the dressing room and you could see he was going to be a top player.

“I really hope we get to see him sign a new contract because, for a top team that wants to fight for everything, you need two players per position and he definitely is (a top player).”

GOMEZ HAS A TOUGH DECISION TO MAKE

If Gomez can earn the regular starts at Anfield, then there is no reason why he should leave and he should put pen-to-paper on a new contract.

But that might not happen because Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip are ahead of the Englishman in the pecking order.

And given that Klopp plays Van Dijk regularly, then that leaves only one place for Gomez to fight for and he is behind two players.

If he plays on a regular basis, then he gets into the England squad, and ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, he needs the minutes if he wants to win back his spot on the international set-up.
