Simon Jordan has expressed his surprise as Crystal Palace close in on a deal that will see West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone return to the Premier League on a free transfer, speaking to talkSPORT.
On the face of it, you can see why the former Eagles chairman has questions.
Crystal Palace already have two experienced, proven top-flight shot-stoppers on their books after all. And Johnstone, who has reportedly agreed a four-year deal at Selhurst Park (The Athletic), will take that number up to three, joining Vicente Guaita and Jack Butland.
“What’s this about Sam Johnstone going to Palace, as another goalkeeper?” Jordan wonders. “They’ve already got Guiata, they’ve already got Jack Butland. Why would they be signing Sam Johnstone as well?”

Delve a little deeper, however, and it’s clear that there is method to the perceived madness. Guaita will be 36 by the time next season comes to an end. What’s more, his contract has just 12 months left to run and the veteran Spaniard has made no secret of his desire to re-join former employers Valencia when he hangs up his gloves.
“I have fewer and fewer years left (in my career) and I don’t know if I will be able to return to Spain,” says Guaita. “Speaking honestly, I would like to return to Valencia.
“How could I not want to return to Valencia?”

While Guaita may be set to depart next summer, Butland could be on the move sooner rather than later. The Sun claims that the former England international will be allowed to leave. It’s no secret that Middlesbrough are looking to enhance their options between the sticks.
Bournemouth and Rangers are also keen. Though it remains to be seen if a move to Ibrox is still on the cards after the evergreen Allan McGregor inked a one-year contract extension.
There’s certainly space for Johnstone at Selhurst Park, then. But, after a less-than-impressive season in the Championship at a West Bromwich Albion side who fell well short of expectations, is he an upgrade on the options currently at Patrick Vieira’s disposal between the sticks?
The surprise in Jordan’s voice, when told Johnstone will be brought in to become Crystal Palace’s new number one, certainly suggests that he will take some convincing.
“Really?!”
