Fabrizio Romano recently reported that RB Leipzig midfielder Tyler Adams is on Leeds United’s shortlist this summer as a possible summer signing – a player that branded his relationship with Jesse Marsch as “interesting”.

Adams, 23, was signed by Marsch at New York Red Bulls and the now-Leeds United boss gave the USA international a professional contract. He then played under Marsch at Leipzig, with Marsch joining Leipzig in the summer of 2021.

Now, Romano reports that Leeds are keen on signing Adams this summer. Whether that is as a possible replacement for Kalvin Phillips remains to be seen, given the England star is being strongly linked with Manchester City.

BILD claim he has a £32million release clause in his contract and given his importance to Leipzig, Leeds might have to activate that to stand any chance of signing him. Speaking in 2021, he described his relationship with Marsch.

“Our relationship is so interesting because he gave me my first professional contract when I was 15 years old or 16 years old, in New York,” Adams told Bundesliga’s website. “It’s crazy. He joined Salzburg first and then come to Leipzig.

“And for me it was from New York to Leipzig and then we connected again. So it’s quite funny how that worked, but I’m very happy. Of course to have an American coach here in Germany again, it’s pretty special.”

Adams on Leeds shortlist: ‘Interesting’ relationship with Marsch

Adams would be a stunning signing. Joining Leipzig in January 2019, he has become an established member of the starting XI over the last two seasons. Marsch has previously described Adams as “tenacious”.

A versatile member of Leipzig’s squad, would he suit Leeds? Without a doubt. But given the Whites have brought in Marc Roca from Bayern Munich, Adams might only join if Phillips does go – as his replacement.

Leeds are now well-stocked in midfield. They still have Phillips, now have Roca, as well as Adam Forshaw, Lewis Bate and Stuart Dallas. It seems that Adams is being seen as a replacement for Phillips.
