Arsenal have reportedly stolen a march on Tottenham Hotspur by lodging an offer for Alvaro Morata.
Mundo Deportivo claimed earlier in June that Tottenham boss Antonio Conte was interested in signing the striker he once labelled a ‘complete player’ [Sky Sports] during the duo’s time together at Chelsea.
However, Arsenal are also in the mix for the Spain international.
In May, it was reported that the Gunners were ‘very close‘ to agreeing a deal with Atletico Madrid to bring the 29-year-old to the Emirates Stadium.
And although speculation went cold for a little while, it could be on the rise again.
According to Italian outlet Calciomercato, Arsenal have made an offer to sign the former Chelsea hitman.
No figure is mentioned by journalist Niccolo Ceccarini, only that a bid has gone in for the player.
As mentioned, Morata has previously been tested in the Premier League with Chelsea and, well, the results were mixed to say the least.
From 47 Premier League outings, the player only managed 16 goals and considering how much was spent on bringing him to Stamford Bridge – £70 million – it was a very disappointing return.
Could Tottenham Hotspur sign Morata?
In a word, yes.
Despite Arsenal’s offer, the Gunners have just signed up Eddie Nketiah to a new contract and Gabriel Jesus of Manchester City is their priority.
In other words, a transfer to the Emirates Stadium isn’t that likely and if Spurs really do want him, well he might be there for the taking – especially given that Conte has Champions League football as a carrot.
