Rafael Leao joining Liverpool was given a big boost on Wednesday.
According to Italian outlet La Stampa, the AC Milan winger has just rejected a new contract at San Siro in a development which would have caused his reported suitors – including Liverpool – to take notice.
La Repubblica reported in May that the Anfield outfit were among the Premier League clubs interested in the Portugal international, whose contract in Italy expires in 2024.
Leao has a £129 million release clause with the Serie A champions, meaning that any club considering a summer swoop is going to have to pay a massive premium for his services.
That is, if the Liverpool-linked attacker winds up leaving which, going by his activity on Twitter, is looking unlikely.
Milan teammate Davide Calabria posted a photograph of himself on social media, holding the Serie A title after helping the Rossonerri to glory this past season.
And Leao’s response suggests that he won’t be anywhere but San Siro next season.
Rafael Leao joining Liverpool?
The report about him rejecting a contract was definitely a major boost.
But no, it looks unlikely that a transfer to Jurgen Klopp’s side will materialise now, on the back of his latest tweet.
Clearly Leao only has eyes for AC Milan despite speculation about his future and it seems improbable that he would be dropping hints like this if he thought a summer departure was viable in any way.
According to Transfermarkt, the 23-year-old managed 26 goal involvements from 42 appearances across all competitions this past season.
