Italian outlet Corriere Della Sera claim Atalanta are in talks to sign Arsenal defender Nuno Tavares on loan this summer. It comes after a disappointing first season at The Emirates, since his move from Benfica.

Tavares, 22, joined Arsenal last summer for a fee of £8million (Sun) but has failed to show Arsenal fans why Mikel Arteta chose to sign him. He managed just 28 appearances in all competitions despite injury to Kieran Tierney.

Reports emerged earlier this summer that Arsenal were discussing a potential loan exit for Tavares. They still think he has a chance of becoming a success with the Gunners – but he needs to reinstall his Benfica confidence.

A move to Atalanta could be just the move he needs. The Serie A side are said to be in talks over signing the Portuguese defender on a temporary basis in the coming weeks and months.

Tavares needs a move. He needs a club where he is first choice and is going to play regular football – if he is to stand any chance of becoming first choice at Arsenal in the future. Kieran Tierney is head and shoulders above.

Recently, we suggested a loan to Leeds United – remaining in the Premier League might suit Tavares in helping him show Arsenal and the club’s supporters what he is capable of. But Atalanta might suit his style.

An attacking side, they like their full-backs to play on the front foot under Gian Piero Gasperini. A move to Serie A would suit the “brilliant” Tavares, especially if the club in question is Atalanta.
