Gary Lineker has taken to Twitter to make a claim about Liverpool, after England suffered a 4-0 defeat to Hungary at Molineux.

What’s the story?

Well, the Three Lions endured a horrible time in the Midlands, suffering their heaviest defeat on home soil since 1928, when Scotland recorded a 5-1 win at Wembley 94 years ago.

Gareth Southgate was also met with boos and cries of “you don’t know what you’re doing” – in our view, that is a joke considering how well England have done across the last two major tournaments.

Nevertheless, Lineker believes the 51-year-old should’ve rested his best players, so they would be fresh for the upcoming World Cup in November.

Interestingly, the BBC Match of the Day host also claimed that Southgate should’ve looked to copy Liverpool’s playing style, and adopt similar tactics to the ones used by Jürgen Klopp.

Of course, that is easier said than done, although England have the players to replicate it, including the most important cog in the machine – Trent Alexander-Arnold.

You can see what Lineker wrote in full below.

It is an interesting point, although Southgate seems somewhat wedded to the conservative approach which led England to the World Cup semi-final and the EURO 2020 final.

Gareth Southgate must learn from England vs Hungary

We appreciate and understand why Southgate trusts his ethos, given how the last two major tournaments have turned out.

However, the 4-0 defeat to Hungary should act as an eye-opener.

England can unquestionably play better than they have been under Southgate.

For whatever reason, Alexander-Arnold has never really been trusted on the international scene, while the likes of Jack Grealish and Jadon Sancho are also underused and undervalued.

On the basis of last night, the players may be losing faith in Southgate’s tactical setup.

With so many exciting players to choose from, yesterday’s hammering to Hungary should certainly force Southgate into a rethink ahead of the World Cup.
