Speaking on the Talking Transfers Podcast, Graeme Bailey has been discussing Dean Henderson and Newcastle’s reported interest in the Manchester United goalkeeper.
The Magpies have long been linked with a move for Henderson, but now, after the appointment of Dan Ashworth, the Tyneside club have backed away from the deal.
It looked as though talks with Henderson were rather advanced, with some reports claiming that the England international had told the Magpies that he wants to sign for the club, but now, it looks like this move isn’t moving ahead.
What’s been said?
Bailey spoke about Henderson and Newcastle.
“Yeah, they were in talks with Dean Henderson, this was before Dan Ashworth came in, the new Sporting Director at Newcastle, but Dan Ashworth has taken control now and he’s backed away from the Dean Henderson deal. I don’t think it’s completely off the table yet, but if it is to happen it will be on Newcastle’s terms not Man United’s, so I think United are looking for other options for him,” Bailey said.

Other options
Henderson may not be signing for Newcastle, but that doesn’t mean that the Magpies won’t be adding a new goalkeeper this summer.
Indeed, according to a number of other reports, the likes of Alphonse Areola and Tomas Strakosha are targets, so it looks like there may well be a new number one through the door at St James’ Park in the coming weeks.
We’re not sure why Ashworth doesn’t want Henderson, but after uncovering Robert Sanchez with Brighton, we have to trust the Sporting Director’s viewpoint when it comes to identifying quality goalies.
