Stephen Warnock has claimed that Michael Edwards has taken a ‘backwards step’ at Liverpool since January, with Julian Ward taking the reigns, as he told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport.
Liverpool’s popular transfer guru is set to leave the club this summer, with 40-year-old Ward taking the reigns.
Well, what a summer for the Englishman to get started because he only has to try and deal with the small matter of Mo Salah and Sadio Mane’s future.
One of the star duo is set to leave this summer, which is a big call from Liverpool’s end, whilst Salah has made it clear that he will stay on for next season.
Nonetheless, ex-Reds left-back Warnock shared what he is hearing about Ward and Edwards, with the summer transfer window officially opening last Friday.
“It’s one that he (Ward) needed to get over the line (Nunez),” said Warnock. “And how they managed the Mane situation is also interesting as well.
“It’s going to be interesting what happens now with the likes of Minamino, Oxlade-Chamberlain, whether those guys will move on.
“Carvalho has come in, whether that was his signing or whether that was something Michael Edwards tried to sort out during the January transfer window?
“From what you hear, in and around the club, is that Michael Edwards has taken a backwards step from January onwards ready for Julian Ward to take that step into the first team.
“To be able to bring players in. He has to continue that trend. This will be a big one (Nunez) for him to get over the line.”

WARD HAS BIG SHOES TO FILL AT LIVERPOOL
The job that Edwards did at Liverpool was a remarkable one and it has seen him gain popularity amongst the fans.
From his ability to secure top talents for next to nothing and allow Klopp to transform into superstars.
And, probably the best of the lot, his ability to get heavy change for players such as Rhian Brewster and Philippe Coutinho.
So, no pressure on Ward, as the Merseyside giants prepare for big changes, off and on the field, with Darwin Nunez closing on a club-record transfer to Liverpool.
