According to 90Min, Liverpool made contact to sign Barcelona midfielder Gavi last week, but now, the Spaniard looks as though he could be signing a new contract with his current club.

Indeed, according to Fabrizio Romano, Gavi’s agent met with Barcelona’s board on Friday as contract negotiations entered their final stages, and it looks like things are progressing positively for La Blaugrana.

According to Romano, the meeting didn’t lead to a final conclusion on Gavi’s contract, but it seems as though it may just be a matter of time before the Spaniard. puts pen to paper on a new deal.

This is, of course, a blow for Liverpool who had long harboured hopes of bringing the midfielder to Anfield, but if the player’s release clause will truly be increased to €1bn, then the Reds can forget about bringing the Barcelona ace to the club.

His previous release clause of just €50m (£43m) was much more reasonable, but a 20-fold increase means that Liverpool have next to no chance of signing the teenager.

Of course, nothing is finalised until there is a signature on the contract, and there are still a few issues to iron out, so all hope is not lost quite yet, but even the most optimistic Liverpool supporter would have to say that this deal is now looking increasingly unlikely.

After missing out on Aurelien Tchoameni and Gavi, Liverpool may now have to look elsewhere for midfield reinforcements.
