Report claims 25-year-old has signed for Southampton, free transfer done

Free-agent goalkeeper Mateusz Lis has signed a four-year deal with Southampton after undergoing a medical with the Premier League club, according to Polish publication Meczyki. 

Is there a chance that The Saints sign not one, not two but as many as three new shot-stoppers within the same transfer window. 

You have probably heard by now that Gavin Bazunu, the Manchester City wonderkid and Republic of Ireland international, is edging ever closer to a £10 million switch to the South Coast (The Athletic). With Willy Caballero expected to follow Fraser Forster out the door, there is still a pretty reasonable chance that Fiorentina’s Bartlomiej Dragowski could be following in Bazunu’s footsteps. 

According to Tomas Wlodarczyk, who broke the news of Southampton’s interest in Lis too, Dragowski will be plying his trade at St Mary’s in 2022/23. 

But what about Lis, a 25-year-old free-agent who departed Altay following their relegation from the Turkish top flight? Well, according to Wlodarczyk, a deal for the one-time Lech Poznan stopper has already been signed and sealed, if not officially announced.  

“Mateusz Lis became a Southampton player. Last week – probably on Thursday – he underwent medical tests and signed a four-year contract,” says the Meczyki reporter.

“Everything’s taken care of. We are only waiting for the official announcement.”

With Bazunu arriving, Dragowski on his way and Alex McCarthy staying put, surely Lis is one goalkeeper too many, right? Well, according to Wlodarczyk, Lis will head out on loan for next season. Potentially with the aim of returning to St Mary’s 12 months later and perhaps filling the third-choice ‘keeper role.

France-based Le Havre appear to be the most likely destination at this stage.

Forster, meanwhile, joined Tottenham Hotspur earlier this week and will provide competition for fellow veteran Hugo Lloris under Antonio Conte. Champions League football at Spurs means there will be plenty of opportunities to stake a claim across a variety of competitions.
