Netflix has just announced that a movie adaptation of the hit zombie manga series, Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead, will release in 2023.
As amazing as Hollywood is at producing jaw-dropping zombie content for Western audiences, it pales in comparison to the scope and quality that Asian production studios can bring to the genre.
Between South Korean titles such as Train to Busan, Kingdom, All of Us Are Dead to Japan’s I Am A Hero and Zombie Land Saga, there are countless must-see Asian depictions of the flesh-eating monsters.
The latest addition to Netflix’s already-vast library of Asian zombie content will be a movie adaptation of the hit manga series, Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead – here’s everything you need to know.
What is Zom 100: Bucked List of the Dead about?
Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead is an upcoming dystopian comedy horror movie, adapted from the hit manga written by Haro Aso and illustrated by Kotaro Takata.
The story focuses on a young man called Akira Tendo, who has been stuck in a mundane production company job for the past three years. Overworked, underpaid and undermotivated, Akira has himself become a mindless zombie, with the exact same routine every single day; however, he dreams of a life without work.
Thankfully, Akira’s dreams/nightmares come true when a zombie apocalypse changes the world forever. Despite hordes of blood-thirsty monsters rampaging across his city, Akira decides to make the most out of a bad situation – thankful that he doesn’t have to go back to work again.
In the end, and where Zom 100’s true adventure truly begins, Akira decides to create a bucket list of 100 things that he would like to accomplish before he gets turned into a zombie himself.
“I think all the zombie fans around the world would enjoy it. You will launch and it will brighten up your day. So even for people afraid of zombies can join and watch the movie. Look forward to how Akira strives to survive with his positive energy! It’s a comedy zombie movie that you will feel exhilarated after watching it!” – Eiji Akaso, via Geeked Week livestream.
Zom 100 features at around the 19-minute mark from the Geeked Week livestream.
Live-action Zom 100 movie announced by Netflix
On Day Two of Netflix’s Geeked Week event, the streaming giant confirmed that a live-action movie of Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead was in development.
During the livestream, it was confirmed that Zom 100 would release in 2023, but a more specific premiere window was sadly not revealed.
The only cast member to be revealed for the Zom 100 movie is Eiji Akaso as Akira. Akaso is a 28-year-old actor and model from Osaka, Japan, and he is best-known for playing Ryuga Banjou in the iconic Kamen Rider franchise. Akaso has also featured in Cherry Magic, Love Me Love Me Not and Tokyo Women’s Guidebook.
Speaking during the Geeked Week livestream, Akaso had the following message for fans of the hit manga series:
“Hello Geeked Week! I’m Eiji Akaso and played the role of Akira in Zombie 100. Akira loses all hopes from working at a crooked company but he wakes p to a zombie apocalypse. It is a survival story of how Akira, with an extraordinary positive nature, takes on this challenge.” – Eiji Akaso, via Geeked Week livestream.
Also speaking during the Zom 100 feature during Geeked Week, the original creator of the manga Haro Aso said that he was “excited to see how my story comes to life in live-action.”
Illustrator Kotaro Takata said that “I wish that our story turns into something fun with the additional creative input by other people” adding that “As a fan of movies, I cannot wait to see the outcome”
“You will find all the common traits of a zombie movie and yet, I wanted to throw in a new character like Akira which you don’t find common. He’s a guy that knows how to best get ahead in life by doing what he wants. I created Akira’s character to encourage people to be as compassionate.” – Haro Aso, via Geeked Week livestream.
Where to read the original manga series
As of June 8th, 10 complete volumes of the Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead manga have been published in Japan, with the 11th set to release on June 17th, 2022.
However, only six of those volumes have been released in English, with the 7th set to launch on August 16th. The good news is that it has never been easier or cheaper to read the hit manga.
