CalcioMercato claim Newcastle are among the Premier League clubs looking at Atalanta centre-back Merih Demiral this summer, as an alternative to Sven Botman. But Atalanta could charge as much as £43million.
Demiral, 24, has put his injury demons behind him to shine on loan at Atalanta during the 2021-22 season. He played 42 times, helping the attacking-style side keep 11 clean sheets. He also found the back of the net twice.

He remains a Juventus player, but Atalanta are likely to sanction the £25million permanent option they have in his loan deal. However, Atalanta are open to a quick sale if the price is right – and Newcastle are keen.
Atalanta are willing to sell the Turkey international for a quick profit between £34million and £43million – the latter perhaps with instalments. It is unclear where Demiral sees his future, though likely to be happy at Atalanta.
Newcastle looking at Demiral: Botman alternative
Demiral is a proper centre-back. Old-fashioned, rugged, powerful, and solid. But his time in Italy has also taught him the art of possession and passing. At 24, he has the potential to become one of Europe’s best.
Botman is likely to cost slightly less than Demiral, but the Dutch defender is also being eyed by AC Milan. It remains to be seen whether Newcastle can finally get a deal over the line for the Lille defender.
If they do not, though, Demiral is the next-best option. Even beyond £34million, he is a good signing and gives Newcastle the defensive platform to build on for years. Money will certainly talk.
