Arsenal quietly signed Auston Trusty in January and they now plan to send the defender out on loan to Europe this summer.

Arsenal didn’t quite get the January transfer window that many fans wanted.

Dusan Vlahovic slipped through the net and there was no major midfield addition despite chasing Juventus ace Arthur Melo.

Arsenal did make a signing on deadline day though and it’s one that made very few headlines.

The Gunners snapped up American defender Auston Trusty before allowing him to stay on loan at Colorado Rapids.

Arsenal quietly signed Auston Trusty

Formerly of Philadelphia Union, Trusty has been an MLS regular in recent years and landed his big move to Arsenal.

Colorado Rapids are owned by Stan Kroenke, just like Arsenal, and it seems that the American businessman played a part in the move.

Trusty, 23, is a left-sided centre back who may well emerge as a replacement for Pablo Mari as depth in Arsenal’s back line.

It felt like a pretty random signing at the time and few Arsenal fans are really considering Trusty as a viable first-team option.

Trusty returns to Arsenal this summer but he may be sent straight out on loan.

CBS Sports now claim that the plan is for Arsenal to loan Trusty to a European club in search of first-team action.

Heading straight from MLS to the Premier League has been a problem for many players in the past, such is the jump in quality and intensity.

The smart move is for Trusty to head out and play somewhere like Belgium, the Netherlands or Portugal ahead of returning to Arsenal again next summer.

That feels like the only way Trusty will really put himself in contention under Mikel Arteta, but if there’s a slim chance, there’s still a chance for the American defender.
