Liverpool have confirmed that James Milner has signed a new one-year deal at Anfield with his original deal ending at the end of the month – prompting Ryan Babel and Sami Hyypia to react on Liverpool’s Instagram.
Milner, 36, has spent the last seven years at Liverpool – winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup. But his time was up on the 30th.
However, Liverpool have agreed to extend his stay by another season – albeit on a smaller wage, according to The Athletic. Dom Matteo said that he would have loved to have him at Leeds, but he has remained.
Sitting on 289 appearances for the Reds, it is now likely that Milner will surpass 300 – having played 39 times for the Reds in 2021-22. Liverpool announced the news on their official Instagram page.
Babel and Hyypia react: Milner has signed a new Liverpool deal
It is the right move. While Milner is now 36, he is considered one of Liverpool’s fittest players. It is not just about what he does on the pitch, but the influence and attitude of Milner is an example to the squad’s younger stars.
His versatility and willingness to adapt to new positions is remarkable. It makes sense, then, for Liverpool to hand Milner another contract. It also gives Milner a chance to catch up with the Premier League record holders.
Gareth Barry, Ryan Giggs and Frank Lampard sit ahead of Milner in terms of record Premier League appearances, with Lampard 21 ahead of Milner in third. Babel posted a brilliant 10-word verdict, while Hyypia also responded.
