Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have given up on signing Gavi from Barcelona and are now in negotiations for Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips, according to Sport.

Sport have reported that although Liverpool were ready to pay €50 million (£42.92m) for Gavi, they have now realised that the midfielder will sign a new contract with Barcelona.

The Premier League giants do not want to put more pressure on the entourage of the 17-year-old, described as a “midfield maestro” by former Tottenham Hotspur striker Gary Lineker on Twitter in October 2021, and have now moved onto England international Phillips.

Liverpool should keep monitoring Barcelona’s Gavi

In our view, Liverpool should continue to monitor Gavi and keep tabs on the Barcelona midfielder.

Gavi is still only 17, and the Spain international could move on from Barcelona in the coming years.

Yes, Barcelona are a massive club and a global brand, but you never know what could happen in the future.

Liverpool are winning trophies on a regular basis now and are very appealing to all footballers.

Maybe in the next two or three years, Liverpool will get a chance again to sign Gavi.

The Barcelona no. 30 made 28 starts and six substitute appearances in La Liga this past season.

Gavi scored two goals and gave five assists in those games.

The teenager also made four starts and two substitute appearances in the Champions League, and made two starts and three substitute appearances in the Europa League.
