Fabrizio Romano claims Everton and West Ham are in talks to sign Montpellier’s English attacker Stephy Mavididi. However, they face competition from Brighton, Southampton and Marseille this summer.

Mavididi, 24, left English football in 2018 when Juventus bought the young attacker from Arsenal. He failed to make a senior appearance for the Gunners, but did enjoy loan spells at Charlton and Preston.

Montpellier signed Mavididi from Juventus in 2020 for £5.2million (Times), and has impressed as Montpellier’s no.10 since. Clocking up 71 appearances since his move, he has scored 17 times – eight coming in 2021-22.

The Mail reported earlier this year that a fee of £15million would tempt Montpellier, representing nearly three times the amount they paid to get him. Romano says Everton and West Ham have opened talks, as have three others.

Certainly, both clubs need additions in the final third. West Ham need more depth, with the 2021-22 campaign showing that they struggled to cope with European football alongside their domestic season.

Everton need better in the final third, especially with Richarlison and Dom Calvert-Lewin linked with the exit. For £15million, there is no doubt that the England Under-20 international would be a very solid addition.

But Mavididi will have to weigh up whether he would start. He might do at Everton if Richarlison does go, but he would struggle to shine with the Hammers. Brighton or Southampton might present a better chance.
