Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku has turned down the chance to join Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window, according to Italian journalist Fabio Bergomi in Calciomercato.it.

The well-known and well-respected journalist as claimed that Lukaku wants to return to Inter Milan and has already rejected Tottenham.

The Belgium international striker worked with Tottenham head coach Antonio Conte at Inter.

Conte and Lukaku won the Serie A title with Inter in 2020-21.

Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku has turned down Tottenham Hotspur

Bergomi told Calciomercato.it, as translated by Sport Witness: “I won’t be able to say everything because I can’t, but on Lukaku there is total convergence. The news has been silenced, he only wants Inter, he doesn’t want any other solution.

“I give you a total gem: he also rejected Conte’s Tottenham. He wants the Nerazzurri because he would be the leader.”

Always unlikely

In our view, it was always unlikely that Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku would join Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window.

Chelsea and Tottenham are bitter London rivals, and leaving the Blues for Spurs would not go down well among the Stamford Bridge faithful.

Moreover, the 29-year-old striker earns £350,000 per week (SalarySport).

Would Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy really pay that much to a 29-year-old striker who has had a disappointing season, and when he has Harry Kane and Son Heung-min in the team?

The Chelsea no. 9 scored eight goals in 26 Premier League matches and scored two goals in six Champions League games this past season.
