Newcastle now want Djed Spence but the Middlesbrough right back is interested in signing for Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur instead.
Spence has won promotion to the Premier League with loan club Nottingham Forest, beating Huddersfield Town in the Championship playoff final.
Spence was loaned out to Forest back in August having fallen out of Neil Warnock’s plans at Boro.
The 21-year-old excelled as a wing back at Forest and was a key driving force in their promotion to the Premier League.
Forest would no doubt love to keep Spence but other Premier League clubs are now looking to sign him.
Newcastle now want Djed Spence
Football London now report that Spence is interested in signing for Tottenham this summer.
The London-born talent has been on Tottenham’s radar for a long time now and Spurs seem ready to make their move.
Spence is understood to be interested in playing for Antonio Conte and Tottenham are now frontrunners to sign him.
The report does though add that Newcastle United have joined the race to sign Spence this summer.
Newcastle have cash to spend and may see Spence as a real talent for the future.
Yet having signed a right back in January in Kieran Trippier, Newcastle aren’t exactly desperate for another right back.

Spence also wouldn’t be likely to take a backup role with his next move having impressed so heavily at Forest.
Spence would allegedly cost £16million and Tottenham seem ready to make their move.
The England Under-21 international has been hailed as ‘very strong’ by Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli, who hated playing against the right back.
Tottenham’s plan seems to be for Emerson Royal to be sold to a Spanish club and then bring in Spence to compete with Matt Doherty at right wing back.
Forest will be a major threat in this race given how much Spence enjoyed his time at the City Ground, but Tottenham now look like favourites.
