The Sun claim both Aston Villa and Southampton have joined Tottenham in the race to sign Peterborough defender Ronnie Edwards. The Posh have been relegated from the Championship, and Edwards could go.

Edwards, 19, broke into Darren Ferguson’s side in the 2020-21 season before becoming a regular last term. Of his 43 senior outings for Peterborough, 38 came during 2021-22. But he failed to prevent the Posh from relegation.

However, he has emerged as one of the rare lights in a dark season – branded an “incredible” talent by Ferguson. Peterborough’s outspoken director of football, Barry Fry, said in April that Spurs wanted Edwards.

Now, the Sun claims Aston Villa and Southampton are plotting £10m moves. Crystal Palace and Manchester United are also said to have taken a look – but the report says they might have to spend more than just £10m.

Indeed. Leipzig, Dortmund and Frankfurt are also interested – and it might require a price between £15million and £20million to convince the Posh to sell. Edwards has a contract with Peterborough until the summer of 2025.

What is a fair price for the defender? When Jude Bellingham left for Dortmund, he was younger – and helped keep Birmingham up. He scored goals, too. But the England star cost the best part of £30million.

So, how much for Edwards? Well, given the level of his performances and his age, he is worth more than £10million – especially if Spurs paid similar for Jack Clarke. A fee of £15million is probably the right kind of figure.
