Speaking to FootballJOE, Michael Owen has been discussing Manchester United and some of their big-name signings in recent years.

Owen was discussing United’s ongoing slump, and the Englishman couldn’t quite get his head around why some of the Red Devils’ biggest signings hadn’t worked out, namechecking Paul Pogba and Angel Di Maria as two who were expected to do great things at Old Trafford.

Owen says that Pogba and Di Maria are both great players, and he thinks that if they’d joined Liverpool or Manchester City rather than United they would have been great in the Premier League.

What’s been said?

Owen spoke about how Pogba and Di Maria would have gotten on at Liverpool or City.

“Look over the years, when United sign these great players, like Di Maria or Pogba, nobody was saying ‘that won’t work’ everyone was saying ‘what a great player’, and you can bet your bottom dollar that if those players went into the Liverpool or the Man City team, they would be great players,” Owen said.

“But it’s like when things go right everything goes right. In the Liverpool team you get swept along with great confidence, a great team, everything is flowing. At United, where everything is going wrong, it’s very difficult for your levels not to sink as well,” Owen said.

Could happen

Owen thinks that Pogba could be a star at Liverpool or Man City, and we may soon find out if that would be the case.

Indeed, the Frenchman, somewhat bizarrely, has been linked to both clubs in recent months, and with his contract soon to expire, he could move to either the Etihad or Anfield on a free transfer.

At the moment, a move to PSG looks more likely, but Pogba does have a Premier League score to settle, and if he wants to showcase his talents properly in this league, a move to Liverpool or City could be just what he needs.
