90Min claim West Ham are in talks to sign Rennes defender Nayef Aguerd, with the Hammers close to agreeing a fee. The Algeria international has been superb for Rennes this season, both in Ligue 1 and in Europe.
The Hammers are likely to be after a centre-back with David Moyes looking to bolster his options in that position. Angelo Ogbonna has been sidelined with injury for the entire season, and the Italian soon turns 34 years of age.
Meanwhile, Issa Diop’s form has been questionable. Craig Dawson and Kurt Zouma have been relied upon – but even the latter has been injured at times. Another centre-back is required, with Conference League secured.
West Ham have identified Aguerd as a ‘priority’ and there is said to be a willingness from both clubs to strike a deal. The Hammers are also close to agreeing a fee. GFFN say Rennes want a fee of around £17million.
West Ham in Aguerd talks: Why defender is perfect for Hammers…
Aguerd has just what Moyes wants in a defender. Comfortable on the ball, but an old-fashioned style centre-back this is superb in the air. He is also incredible from set-pieces, both defending them and going forward.
This season, Aguerd has had a hand in seven goals during 40 appearances. He has scored four times, and laid on three assists. Aguerd has also contributed to 14 clean sheets in that time, a decent season’s work.
Having only just turned 26, Aguerd is a bargain at £17million and even more so, if the Hammers can negotiate that fee somewhat. A smart signing from the London club, if Moyes and co. can get a deal over the line.
