The ongoing Johnny Depp and Amber Heard defamation case has brought attention to the actor’s California real estate and whom he previously allowed to live there.
Owning five penthouses between 2013 and 2016, Depp claimed in court he had let his ex-wife’s friends live in his property free of charge, as per Independent reports.
We explore details inside the 58-year-old’s apartments as well as information about the reported residents that have since taken the stand during the court case.
Johnny Depp owned five penthouses
A spotlight was drawn upon Johnny Depp’s California real estate when details of his property were mentioned in court during the defamation case in which closing arguments are scheduled to take place on 27th May 2022.
Previously testifying in court were Depp’s longtime friend and neighbour named Isaac Baruch along with the general manager of the building, Brandon Patterson.
Between 2013 and 2016, Depp owned five penthouses located on the top floor of the historic Eastern Columbia Building on Broadway in the theatre district of Downtown Los Angeles, according to Independent reports.
Isaac Baruch explained that he had known Depp since they were teenagers and as part of a financial support arrangement, the actor let him live in one of the penthouses.
Amber Heard’s friends lived in the property for free
Johnny Depp and his ex-wife lived next door and shared an adjoining balcony leading to Mr Baruch.
Amber Heard’s sister lived in another penthouse and Mail Online reports that Whitney Henriquez admitted that she was mostly drunk when she lived in one of the apartments between 2014 and 2015.
When Heard’s attorney, Elaine Bredehoft asked Henriquez if she was on any drugs at the time of her residence, Henriquez surprisingly stated: “It was a rare occasion when I was sober”.
Meanwhile, friends then occupied the other penthouses. Amber Heard’s companion Rocky Pennington and her then-husband Joshua Drew also lived at the property rent-free, The Sun reported.
Three of the units were connected via doorways with another used by Mr Baruch as his home and art studio, and the fifth was a guest suite.
Inside the Californian apartments
The five posh penthouses reportedly cost Depp a combined $7 million to own, The Los Angeles Times reported.
A floorplan of the penthouse level of the building was submitted as evidence to give to the jury, showing the apartments featuring large windows, rich dark wooden flooring, tall ceilings with mezzanine levels and industrial-looking staircases.
The actor’s eccentric style is displayed in the design of the property, with a mix of sleek modern kitchens alongside colourfully decorated bohemian-themed bedrooms, Art Deco bathrooms with colour expressed throughout, as described by The Independent.
One of the residents, Isaac Baruch, had fond recollections of this time of almost semi-communal living, reportedly remembering the group all becoming good friends and entertaining in each other’s penthouses.
While living there, the former couple was adjacent to the building’s rooftop pool that had views over the city.
Johnny Depp is suing Amber Heard for defamation because of an op-ed she published in the Washington Post in 2018. Heard is countersuing Depp.
The case is set to continue.
