£27m star who wants to quit Tottenham has just won end-of-season award at Spurs

This season hasn’t been a complete failure for Steven Bergwijn at Tottenham Hotspur.

Well, the Netherlands international only managed four Premier League starts all campaign – and three of those were in August, which really sums up his struggles under Antonio Conte.

But Spurs had their end-of-season awards on Sunday following a 1-0 victory over Burnley and despite his low-profile contribution, the former PSV Eindhoven winger did scoop one.

Back in January, Bergwijn, a £27 million signing in 2020, came off the bench to score two stoppage-time goals to give the Lilywhites a 3-2 victory away to Leicester City.

And with Tottenham now two points clear of Arsenal in the hunt for Champions League qualification, what a massive win that could prove to be.

It wasn’t a brilliant second goal and had it been scored in the 36th minute, rather than the dying seconds, it would’ve been forgotten about entirely.

However, the North Londoners announced on their official website that it was voted their goal of the year, with the Dutchman latching on to Harry Kane’s defence-splitting pass before rounding Kasper Schmeichel and finding the far corner via the post.

Bergwijn leaving Tottenham?

Despite this award, yes he’s most likely still going to leave.

Starting four Premier League games is ridiculous and even the player himself acknowledges that he doesn’t play.

Last weekend, Bergwijn admitted via Dutch media that a summer departure was definitely possible, with Fabrizio Romano adding this week that there’s a ‘huge chance’ of him going.

And honestly, few can blame the player.

He isn’t the next Cristiano Ronaldo, but he is a fine footballer on his day and he’ll need regular football to boost his chances of making the World Cup squad later this year.
