24-year-old becomes Tottenham’s fifth injured player, Conte says he’s done for season

Well, Tottenham Hotspur supporters won’t be seeing Cristian Romero until next season.

Antonio Conte revealed to Tottenham’s official website, ahead of this afternoon’s visit of Burnley, that the Argentina international is unlikely to recover from his hip injury between now and the end of the campaign.

Romero sat out the 3-0 drubbing of North London rivals Arsenal in midweek as Davinson Sanchez expertly deputised for the Atalanta-owned powerhouse.

Spurs have to win their final two Premier League outings to maximise their chances of pipping the Gunners to Champions League qualification but, if that is to happen, the South American won’t be playing a role.

Conte said: “Cristian received a hit on his hip in the game against Liverpool, at the end. Honestly, we didn’t think it was a serious problem. Instead, the problem is not serious, but I think he has not got the possibility to recover for these last two games.”

Romero is now Tottenham’s fifth player that Conte won’t be able to call on against the Lancashire side – or until next season.

Sergio Reguilon, Japhet Tanganga, Oliver Skipp and Matt Doherty are all also ruled out for the remainder of this term but you could argue that Romero is the big one.

He has been simply immense for the vast majority of this year, culminating in the Londoners being able to string together a stunning run of form in the Premier League.

In fact, beating the Clarets would see Conte’s side move fourth in the Premier League table with one game to go, by two points.

Arsenal could return to fourth on Monday night, but winning at Newcastle United is far from easy these days and with the Gunners’ existing injury concerns, well it wouldn’t be a surprise if Tottenham go into their final game of the season – away to relegated Norwich City – knowing that victory would guarantee them fourth and Champions League football.
