Netflix subscribers who have recently watched the documentary Our Father want to know more about the Quiverfull movement mentioned in the show.
We explain what the cult-like movement is, reveal how many children the subject of Our Father, Dr Donald Cline, fathered during his time as a fertility doctor, and confirm whether he is still alive.
Directed by Lucie Jourdan, Our Father sees Jacoba Ballard lead the documentary as she uncovers the truth about her parents’ fertility doctor. The film uses a series of interviews and re-enactments to recap the events that transpired.
What is the Quiverfull cult?
The Quiverfull cult, or Quiverfull movement, is a branch of Evangelical Christianity that feels large families are a blessing from God.
Its motto – Be fruitful and multiply – comes from the book of Genesis in the Bible. The Quiverfull movement gets its name from Psalm 127:3–5: “As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them.”
Quiverfull followers are against birth control, sterilisation and abortion and have been devout advocates of procreation since the movement became popular in the 20th century.
In an attempt to explain why Donald Cline committed fertility fraud, Jacoba Ballard and her siblings make claims he may have been associated with the movement. There is, however, no proof of this.
How many kids did Donald Cline father?
Cline has fathered 94 half-siblings, Netflix confirmed, and the number is likely to increase once more DNA tests are conducted.
Lisa Shepherd, who appears in the documentary as “Sibling #33”, spoke about the concerns she faces on a daily basis:
“When we get a new sibling alert, you’re praying, ‘Please don’t let it be somebody I know.’ Or, ‘Please don’t let it be somebody I dated.'”
Jacoba Ballard said she fears she could be related to anyone she walks past:
“The majority of us live in a 25-mile radius of each other. There’s also quite a few who live within minutes of Cline. I walk around and I could be related to anyone.”
Is Dr Donald Cline still alive?
Yes, Dr Donald Cline is still alive and living as a free man in Indianapolis, Indiana, as reported by The Atlantic.
Despite many of Cline’s half-siblings banding together to file a complaint against him, the doctor’s only charge was for obstruction of justice for lying to the attorney general’s office about inseminating patients with his sperm and hindering the investigation.
Cline was fined $500 and had his medical licence revoked, although he had retired in 2009.
Our Father is now streaming on Netflix.
