After first airing in 2013, The Blacklist went on to become one of the most popular shows on TV, earning as many as 15 million viewers per episode at its peak.

The show still draws in plenty of fans almost ten years on but, with the final few episodes of season 9 currently airing, attention is understandably turning to the future of the NBC series.

Is The Blacklist returning for season 10 or does the James Spader-led series face cancellation?

The Blacklist season 9 recap

Season 9 of The Blacklist began airing on NBC on October 21st, 2021, in an unfamiliar Thursday night slot before returning to its usual Friday home after the mid-season break.

The series picked up events two years after the shocking death of Megan Boone’s Elizabeth Keen, which left the show’s FBI Task Force disbanded and Raymond Reddington’s whereabouts unknown.

However, Red and the gang are called back into action when a common purpose compels them to renew their mission of taking down dangerous individuals on the titular Blacklist.

As the season has progressed, tension has arisen within the FBI Task Force as the group has been assigned a new leader, Aram Mojtabai, who has come a long way since being introduced as the lowly IT expert in season 1.

Aram’s new role has not gone down well with Red, especially, as he struggles to trust his newly promoted superior.

Will The Blacklist return for season 10?

Yes, NBC has confirmed the renewal of The Blacklist for season 10.

The announcement came in February 2022 during James Spader’s appearance on The Tonight Show when The Blacklist actor revealed the news to host Jimmy Fallon.

While The Blacklist may be entering its tenth season, the show remains popular with fans. Deadline reported earlier this year that the series had reached a whopping 22 million viewers across linear and digital platforms during season 9.

Season 10 of The Blacklist will begin airing on NBC in the fall of 2022 as the next annual TV season begins.

Fans react to The Blacklist’s renewal

As The Blacklist has been on our screens for almost ten years the show has earned itself millions of fans – so news of its renewal sparked plenty of conversation on social media.

One jubilant fan on Twitter wrote: “I am so happy. Season 10 is real! Congratulations to all cast and crew.”

Another commented: “That’s great news. Mind you, I am struggling with season 9 but it’s nice to see.”

This fan was less impressed: “Will they ever cancel this show?”

This Twitter fan also believed the show should end soon: “I’m happy – but let’s end this after season 10.”

This message was echoed by another fan: “YAY! I do feel like it’s time to start wrapping it up but one and a half seasons to do it is great – they’ve got time to finish the story and resolve the plot lines in a really good way.”

And finally, this frustrated viewer wrote: “I was told in season 2 it would take five seasons to tell the full story. Now it seems like the executives are just milking every last cent they can get from this IP without giving fans any answers.”
