Ex-Gogglebox star Andrew Bennett jailed

Andrew Bennett, 47, has been jailed after he “cornered” a teenage boy at a house and subjected him to an attack that left the boy “in tears”, as per Mirror.

The court was told Andrew, who initially denied the attack, took selfies with the victim before cornering him on a sofa at the property and attempting to lure the boy into the bedroom for a sex act.

Andrew admitted one charge of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and two of sexual activity with a child after DNA evidence confirmed the assault.

The former TV personality was sentenced to 29 months in prison and ordered to sign the sex offenders register.

Statements from court

During his court appearance, Bennett was told that he must abide by a sexual harm prevention order for ten years.

Judge Tim Gittins told Bennett in court: “You sought to blame slimming drugs for your behaviour. I acknowledge this was an aberration in your behaviour, it was unplanned and only occurred because you were intoxicated.”

The prosecutor said in court that Bennett was under the influence of alcohol and asked the teenager if he was gay, the Mirror further reports. The teen said he wasn’t but Bennett continued to pursue him, the court heard.

CPS (The Crown Prosecution Service) North East’s Andrew Jones said: “During his first interview with police Bennett denied having touched his victim, claiming only to have spoken to the boy at the time of the alleged attacks, but then claimed that his behaviour had been affected by slimming tablets when further physical evidence was shown to him.”

Jones continued: “The Crown Prosecution Service has worked closely with police, piecing together forensic evidence and witness testimony to build a robust case, which has been instrumental in securing guilty pleas to all charges against the defendant.

“Andrew Bennett carried out these attacks in a selfish pursuit of his own sexual gratification and the impact on this boy has been significant.

“We sincerely hope that the sentence passed today provides some measure of comfort to him.”

Andrew Bennett, who hails from South Shields, appeared in series 12 of Gogglebox with his friend Fawn. They made their debut appearance in episodes that originally aired in 2018.
