US outlet SBI Soccer claim Newcastle United have joined other Premier League clubs and Celtic in the race to sign Tottenham defender Cameron Carter-Vickers this summer. He has sparkled for Celtic on loan, this term.
After a succession of loans to the Championship with Bournemouth, Swansea, Stoke, Luton, Sheffield United and Ipswich – eight-time USA star Carter-Vickers tried something different last summer and went to Celtic.
It was an inspired move. Clocking up a huge 44 appearances this season, he is on the verge of winning the Premiership title alongside Joe Hart – and qualifying with Celtic for the Champions League group stages next term.
Celtic are expected to be one of the front runners and have the option to make the deal permanent – SBI Soccer reporting that it will cost Ange Postecoglou’s side an initial £6million, and rise to £10million with add-ons.
The report also claims that Eddie Howe’s Newcastle are interested in luring Carter-Vickers to Tyneside – while other Premier League clubs including Fulham and Southampton also want to sign the powerhouse defender.
Newcastle eye Carter-Vickers: Celtic, Toon, Tottenham – best move?
There is no chance he breaks into Antonio Conte’s Tottenham side – that ship has sailed and with his contract only a year away from expiring, it is time to go. Southampton or Fulham would be excellent moves for him.
It would see him start Premier League games for a top-tier club – but the Saints could lose James Ward-Prowse this summer and without him, they could be in a relegation scrap. Fulham certainly will be, too.
The lure of playing under the lights at Celtic in the Champions League group stage has got to be an attractive proposition for Carter-Vickers – who still has plenty of time at 24 to come down south. Celtic is his best move.
