Tottenham Hotspur may well fancy signing RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol, but they seemingly fear he will head elsewhere amid interest from Chelsea.

The Daily Mail have claimed that Tottenham had made Gvardiol their top defensive target this summer.

Now though, Tottenham fear offers from ‘stronger competition’ as they seemingly lose hope of signing the Croatian.

Reports from Germany in April suggested that Thomas Tuchel wants to bring Gvardiol to Chelsea this summer.

That may be the kind of battle Tottenham are fearing with Chelsea potentially set to be in a position to spend this summer.

Leipzig surely won’t want to sell easily this summer, especially with Gvardiol thought of as an ‘extraordinary’ talent according to compatriot Ivica Olic.

Tottenham seemingly don’t think they can win this race now though, and may look towards other left-sided defenders instead.

Gvardiol is just what Tottenham need

Ben Davies has been performing admirably as Tottenham’s left-sided centre back, converting to play there under Antonio Conte.

Yet Tottenham will understandably want to sign a player more natural in that role and one who can be a key player there for years to come.

Cristian Romero has the right side of defence locked down but an addition on the left will also be key.

Gvardiol is exactly what Tottenham are seeking. He is quick, aggressive and sturdy for his 6ft 1in frame.

Gvardiol is comfortable on the ball and can carry it forward, whilst he’s also comfortable defending in wide areas.

Romero and Gvardiol are both top defensive talents and could give Tottenham the kind of solidity they’re targeting.

Gvardiol is just 20 and has the world at his feet. Tottenham are absolutely right to be targeting him, but they may already feel they will be overpowered in the race for his signature.
