David Meyler believes that Gabriel Jesus would represent a ‘good signing’ for Arsenal – and believes it’s plausible, based on Mikel Arteta’s relationship with Pep Guardiola.
Arsenal are heavily linked with a move for the Manchester City hitman this summer, with Arteta’s side told to cough up £40 million for the player.
According to Jorge Nicola, who reported late in April, the Gunners are actually in advanced negotiations with the player himself regarding a transfer to the Emirates Stadium.
Since speculation about Gabriel began, the Sky Blues hitman simply hasn’t stopped scoring goals.
The Brazilian attacker has netted six goals in less than two weeks following the rumours, including four in a Premier League victory over Watford on April 23.
Arteta will know the player well after spending a number of years as Guardiola’s number two at the Etihad Stadium.
And former Premier League star Meyler believes that the Arsenal manager’s friendship with his fellow Spaniard gives this deal a lot of legs.
He told Off the Ball: “Obviously there’s the link with Arsenal. I think he’d be a good signing for Arsenal. Obviously then there’s a relationship between Pep and Arteta that he might, you know, look after his old mate.”
Good signing?
Meyler is right – it would absolutely be a good signing for the North Londoners.
Gabriel’s form over the past couple of weeks is a reminder of his quality and remember, Arsenal will need a number of striking options this summer.
As things stand, Folarin Balogun will be Arteta’s only number nine this summer – and he’s 20 with virtually no Premier League experience.
Eddie Nketiah and Alexandre Lacazette are both out of contract and probably leaving the Emirates, meaning that marksmen will be arriving.
And if someone like Gabriel is one of them, well that’s a coup for the Gunners and maybe, just maybe, Arteta’s friendship with Guardiola could play a role.
