Former Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster now looks set to leave Southampton on a free transfer this summer – but a Parkhead return surely isn’t on the horizon.

Forster became a star in his first spell at Celtic, thriving on loan from Newcastle United in the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons.

Celtic signed Forster permanently and he continued his ascent before being sold to Southampton in the summer of 2014.

Some five years on, having fallen down the Southampton pecking order, Forster was back at Celtic for a season-long loan.

Forster recaptured his best form before COVID-19 curtailed the Scottish season.

Celtic weren’t able to keep Forster and instead signed Vasilis Barkas in a move that simply didn’t work out.

Unsurprisingly, Forster rumours were back last summer. Celtic allegedly wanted to bring Forster back to Glasgow as Ange Postecoglou’s new stopper.

Once again though, that didn’t happen with Joe Hart signing a three-year deal at Celtic last summer.

34-year-old Forster is out of contract this summer and The Telegraph report that he looks set to leave Southampton for nothing.

Southampton are expected to move forward with Alex McCarthy and let Forster go after eight years on their books.

Forster’s imminent availability will lead to questions about another return to Celtic – but surely that won’t be happening.

Hart being under contract for another two years effectively rules Celtic out of contention for another veteran goalkeeper any time soon.

There is no way Celtic would pay up for Forster just to compete with Hart, nor would they sign him to replace the former Tottenham man.

Forster has enjoyed a great relationship with Celtic over the years; three loan spells and a superb permanent stint.

It now looks like the story is done though, and it’s hard to see Forster turning out for Celtic again even as he prepares to become a free agent.
