Yesterday, it was announced that Jürgen Klopp had signed a new contract, keeping him at Liverpool until June 2026.
The 54-year-old’s previous deal was set to expire in June 2024, and he admitted as recently as March that his plan was to leave Anfield at that point.
The Athletic quote him as saying: “The plan at the moment is to get to 2024 and then, ‘Thank you very much.’”
So, what caused the change? Well, by the sounds of things, Klopp’s wife Ulla Sandrock had a big part to play…
Who is Jürgen Klopp’s wife?
During his time in Germany, Klopp met Sandrock while she was working as a waitress in a bar in Munich during Oktoberfest.
The pair then got married in December 2005.
Sandrock is a children’s novelist, having previously worked as a teacher, and wrote the book: ‘Elli and Pit: Who is the goalkeeper of Mainz 05?’

Clearly, she enjoys tying Klopp’s involvement in football into her writing.
Sandrock is also known as a charitable person, which aligns with her husband’s socialist views – she carries the nickname ‘First Lady of the Bundesliga’ because of her philanthropy and marriage to Klopp.
How did Ulla Sandrock convince Jürgen Klopp to stay at Liverpool?
Before listing any other reason, Klopp admitted he penned his new contract “because Ulla wants to stay” on Merseyside.
The German revealed that his wife said she “can’t see us leaving in 2024” during a discussion around the kitchen table, which was when he first considered extending his contract.
Then, a positive chat with his No.2 Pep Lijnders happened, and talks between Klopp and Liverpool accelerated.
Does Ulla Sandrock go to Liverpool games?
She does! Not all of them, but Klopp’s wife does attend Liverpool games, and was even seen in the away end at the Etihad Stadium for the recent 2-2 draw with Manchester City.

Sandrock attended the top-of-the-table clash against Klopp’s wishes, after she was unfortunately elbowed when sitting in the away end at Old Trafford.
Evidently, Liverpool fans have a lot to thank Klopp’s significant other for, as he may not have signed a new contract without her influence.
