Dion Dublin has claimed Newcastle United signing Kieran Trippier during the January transfer window was a ‘genius move’ by Eddie Howe.

The former Aston Villa striker added by saying that the Newcastle right-back is a ‘world-class’ player, as he told the Kelly & Wrighty Show on Premier League Productions (28/04/22 at 12:55 pm).

Prior to his injury, Trippier was making quite the impact for Newcastle, including scoring back-to-back free-kicks.

At the time, fans would have probably rightfully panicked at the idea of losing the 31-year-old to a foot injury because they were still in trouble.

Yet, when he returns before the final ball is kicked in May, nevermind Newcastle surviving, they may well finish in the Premier League’s top ten.

Trippier’s signing in January was a statement of intent from the club and Dublin thinks his arrival will now set the trail for other big stars to join during the summer transfer window.

“It was a genius move,” said Dublin. “For him to do that, he has helped Newcastle out so much.

“People have looked at him and gone ‘hold up a minute, he’s a world-class right-back. I want to go where he goes’.

“He’s now going to be that catalyst of other players to go ‘if he’s going to go, then I am going to go’.”

It’s going to be interesting to see how Newcastle handle the summer transfer because, just like the winter, all eyes will be on them.

Once again, they will be the main event, teams will perhaps demand that bit extra from them because they know how big their pickets are, so they will have to deal with it pretty well.

In truth, they did a very good job of it in January, so if they follow suit again, then the forthcoming season might just be a special one for all involved.
