Simon Jordan has claimed that Sunderland will ‘always be in the shadow’ of Newcastle United, as he told talkSPORT.

The former Crystal Palace owner was asked, pound-for-pound, which non-Premier League team is best to buy, as he dropped League One Sunderland into the hat, alongside the likes of Portsmouth, Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday.

England’s lower leagues are littered with sleeping giants, former European Cup winners or multiple English league champions.

From Nottingham Forest to Sunderland themselves, dropping down divisions has been a place many big clubs have found difficult to get out of.

Nonetheless, whilst Jordan has been pretty critical of Newcastle in recent times, his latest comments will sit very well with the fans.

“Sunderland will always be, in my view, and I know they are going to hate this Sunderland fans, in the shadow of Newcastle,” said Jordan.

“Even more so now with the Newcastle ownership model.

“But Sunderland, coming back, if they can get out of this miserable League One.”

Whilst Newcastle prepare for a possibly mouth-watering and heavy-spending summer transfer window.

Their neighbours are still trying to claw their way out of England’s third-tier and are currently sitting fifth in League One.

It’s the final weekend of the season in League One and Sunderland need three points at Morecambe to avoid dropping out of the top six.

Of course, they could still stay in with a defeat, but other results could harm them if that happens.
