Bruno Guimaraes held talks with Serie A giants Juventus before completing a £33 million move to Premier League outfit Newcastle United in the January transfer window, the Brazil international’s agent tells TuttoJuve

It is well documented that the former Lyon star was a target for Arsenal prior to becoming the first truly big-money signing of the Saudi Arabian era at St James’ Park.

But, until now, Juventus’ interest in Newcastle’s masterful midfield maestro had flown somewhat under the radar.

“Yes, there was some contact with Juventus. I can confirm that,” says Bruno’s representative, Alexis Malalvolta.

“January is a quick window to enter into negotiations. We had to wait halfway through the month to see some concrete movement.

“And Newcastle arrived. They got serious. Bruno couldn’t wait another six months to decide his future in a World Cup year.”

Newcastle’s best signing in years?

Putting pen to paper on a long-term deal until the summer of 2026, Bruno has scored four goals in his last seven Premier League starts under Eddie Howe.

In fact, he’s already found the net more times for Newcastle than he did in his entire Lyon career.

And arguably the club’s most naturally talented midfielder since a certain Yohan Cabaye has made no secret of his desire to help Newcastle return to the very top of the English and European game, setting his sights on Champions League qualification.

“(The transfer) happened in a window, the winter one, where usually little or nothing happens,” Malalvolta adds. “He is very happy at Newcastle and is fulfilling his dream of playing in the Premier League.

“He has always been very motivated to accept challenges (and) he never backs down. Bruno is delighted with the choice made. He is happy.

“His goal was clear from the start; to help the team get out of the relegation zone and take them to the Champions League next season. And, why not, try to win the Premier League.

“He has already made it clear in his interviews that he went to Newcastle to be a legend like Alan Shearer. He wants to leave his name in the history of the club.”
