Twitter users are astonishingly claiming that Netflix’s new Japanese series He’s Expecting is the reason why the platform is losing subscribers.
Another day, another internet controversy is taking shape. This time, the platform in the crosshairs of a Twitter war is Netflix and their brand-new Japanese comedy-drama series, He’s Expecting.
Despite being an entirely innocent series, which educates the audiences about some of the negative stereotypes that pregnant people have to still deal with in the modern world, it appears that not everyone is happy about the show’s launch.
As fans around the world settle down in front of Netflix to watch the new series, Twitter is erupting with negative reactions and responses with posts even going as far as to claim He’s Expecting is why the platform is losing subscribers.

Netflix releases new Japanese drama, He’s Expecting
Today, April 21st, Netflix released their latest original Japanese drama, an eight-episode series called “He’s Expecting.”
The new show is a loose adaptation of Eri Sakai’s popular 2012 manga series called Kentaro Hiyama’s First Pregnancy, which was published in Kodansha’s Be Love magazine.
He’s Expecting follows the story of Kentaro Hiyama, a 32-year-old salesman who unexpectedly becomes pregnant, following a global phenomenon when men can give birth that occurred a decade prior.
Whilst the pregnancy is an obvious shock to Kentaro and his partner Aki Seto, the two must embark on an unusual, emotional and confusing journey towards parenthood. However, physical consequences aside, Kentaro must also deal with the horrific “prejudices against pregnant men, forcing him to rethink everything he knew.”
“As a pregnant man, Kentaro will face the scrutiny of the company and society, and will shed light on the hardships experienced by pregnant women. Challenged by many problems associated with modern pregnancy and childbirth, the two will have to face reality and make the ultimate decision: to have a baby or not.” – Preview synopsis, via Netflix.

Twitter users claim series is why Netflix is losing subscribers
The He’s Expecting series has only been available to watch on Netflix for a few short hours, but Twitter users are already posting their reactions online with a notable portion of posts being outlandishly ignorant about pregnancy and ‘woke culture’.
Even from the briefest scroll through social media, there are countless posts relating to how users are “cancelling [Netflix subscriptions] because of the CRAZY WOKENESS you are buying into”, as one user put it.
“Unfortunately we canceled @netflix. Tons of reasons why, but this was the final straw. They don’t listen to anything you say, they only listen to money. #CancelNetflix #BoycottNetflix He’s Expecting? Seriously? We are in the upside down world.” – User belogical2, via Twitter.
- NETFLIX: Why is the platform losing subscribers as streaming service’s stock plunges?
Another user tagged Netflix directly and claimed, “stop raising my rates to add content and then coming out with BS shows like He’s Expecting.”
“Get rid of the WOKE B.S. like this – Netflix is also scheduled to release a new show on Thursday called “He’s Expecting.” otherwise I too will be CANCELING my subscription! What a CROC of SH***! TOTAL NONSENSE!!” – User Johnny97678143, via Twitter.
- DERRY GIRLS: Slang you’ve probably never heard of or understood true meaning
However, some users have even gone as far as to claim that He’s Expecting is why Netflix recently saw its first decrease in subscribers in 10 years. Earlier this week, it was revealed that the streaming giant had lost some 200,000 subscribers in Q1 2022, with multiple Twitter posts claiming that this is solely down to the production of He’s Expecting.
One user said that Netflix is down “-26% and they still wanna highlight movies like this “he’s expecting”. When will these woke companies realize pandering to the .1% is a bad business move? Most of us are pretty normal people who just want to see normal stuff? Maybe try that.”
- RUSSIAN DOLL: Season 2 soundtrack with a full, phenomenal tracklist
“@netflix if you keep producing crap like he’s expecting, expect more cancelations.” – User CooloTroy, via Twitter.
Another added how following the infamous Cuties movie, “He’s Expecting should hammer the last nail into their coffin” and that it’s “Time to take them down for good! CANCEL NETFLIX ! If not, you’re part of the problem!”
On the flip side, there are Twitter users arguing against this sentiment, with one stating how when the “fake outrage machine attacks” the show, “it just shows that they are just followers and don’t do even 5 seconds of research watching a trailer… to find out it’s about a CIS MAN!”
Fans of the original manga series and the new live-action adaptation have also been quick to point out that similar stories have already made their way into Hollywood before; most notably the 1994 Arnold Schwarzenegger classic, Junior, where the same male pregnancy happens.
“If you’re mad at Netflix’s “He’s Expecting”, you’re going to lose your s*** at what Arnold Schwarzenegger was doing in the 90s.” – User PositivelyKen, via Twitter.
Ironically, the series fantastic lead actor Takumi Saitoh reportedly researched Junior as part of his studying for the role; arguably more research than any of the aforementioned Twitter users.
