Speaking on Stadium Astro, Steve McManaman has been speaking about Mohamed Salah and his recent run of below-par form.

The Egyptian netted a brace against Manchester United on Tuesday, but before that he was on a lengthy run without a goal from open play.

The winger has made his name as one of the deadliest attackers in Premier League history, but in early 2022, he has faltered.

However, despite his recent struggles, McManaman says Salah’s performances have been ok, but they’ve come under extra scrutiny due to the standards he has set in recent years.

What’s been said?

McManaman spoke about Salah’s recent drought.

“I think he’s been playing ok, I don’t think he’s been struggling,” McManaman said.

“it’s just that he’s been electric this season, scoring that many goals. People were talking about being a Ballon d’Or winner and the type of goals he’s scored, his standards were so high, and it can drop off after the African Nations and the World Cup qualifiers.

“It’s no problem that there’s a slight drop off because it happens to every single player, it’s just the higher profile you are, the more it’s noticed and the more it’s spoken about.”

Happens to the best

As McManaman says, a bad run of form isn’t uncommon for even the best players in the world – just look at Lionel Messi’s struggles at PSG this season, and as Salah showed on Tuesday, form is temporary, but class is permanent.

The Egyptian looked to be back to his best against Manchester United, and it wouldn’t surprise us in the slightest if that sparked another incredible run of form that eventually earns him a Golden Boot and potentially another Premier League winners’ medal.

Salah hasn’t been scoring at a ridiculous rate as of late, but his all-around play has still been excellent and he remains one of the Reds’ most important players.
