Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has heaped praise on midfielder Thiago Alcantara after his stunning performance against Manchester United.

Liverpool hosted their old rivals United at Anfield on Tuesday night, seeking to recreate the 5-0 win at Old Trafford earlier in the season.

It wasn’t five this time, but it easily could have been as Liverpool coasted to a 4-0 victory.

Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah had Liverpool 2-0 up by the break before Sadio Mane added number three. Salah then rounded off the scoring with his second and Liverpool’s fourth.

The gap between the two sides was absolutely astonishing as Liverpool barely had to get out of second gear in the second half.

A number of players excelled in Liverpool red but it was midfielder Thiago who really stole the show.

We know the Spaniard as a midfield metronome, using his passing ability to help Liverpool’s control the middle of the park.

Against United it felt like Thiago was everywhere; always in space, always going past players, always hitting the mark with his passes, always able to break up play.

When the Spaniard was substituted late on for Naby Keita, all corners of Anfield stood to applaud the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich ace.

Remember when people suggested that Thiago had been a flop at Liverpool? It all seems very funny now.

Carragher was absolutely blown away by Thiago, suggesting on Sky Sports (20/04, 9:13pm) that it was like he was playing against kids.

Carragher just felt that Thiago was finding it so easy against the Manchester United midfield, almost warning against complacency.

When Thiago walked off, Carragher simply stated that this was his best ever performance at Anfield – something many Liverpool fans would support.

“I’m watching Thiago, it’s like he’s playing in the back yard with kids,” said Carragher. “There were a few signs towards the end of the first half that he was getting casual it was that easy for him, just dribbling past players.”

“I think there’s no doubt that’s his best game he’s ever had at Anfield, I’m sure of it,” he added.
