South American outlet Caracol claim Marcelo Bielsa is now one of the names on the Colombia radar – after Reinaldo Rueda was sacked. Bielsa is out of work after leaving Leeds in early March, after four years.
Bielsa, 66, has returned to his native Argentina and has been linked with numerous roles since being sacked by Leeds. The Bolivia job has been touted, as has a return to Newell’s Old Boys – where Bielsa is a club legend.
It is yet to be seen if Bielsa will return to football management at all, but given his intense nature as a manager – it is likely. Colombia have decided to part ways with Rueda, after he failed to guide his side into the World Cup.
That might prove a crucial factor in Bielsa’s thinking, with Colombia’s star-studded squad having to watch the tournament from home. The report states Bielsa is one of a number of names on the radar for Colombia.
However, the report also states that his wages might prove too high – given he was earning £147,000 a week at Elland Road beforehand. Bielsa, of course, does have experience of managing South American countries.
Also on the shortlist are Peru manager Ricardo Gareca, Belgium gaffer Roberto Martinez and Croatia boss Zlatko Dalic.
Bielsa to Colombia? International job likely for Leeds legend
Given his age, and his time in England away from his family, a job as manager of a national team is much more likely for Bielsa. It would give him more freedom, the time to relax in between fixtures at home.
The Argentine boasts 10 years under his belt in international management, six years with Argentina between 1998 and 2004 and then four years with Chile between 2007 and 2011. One Colombia should take advantage, of.
