Dean Jones has told Give Me Sport that Allan Saint-Maximin wants a pay rise to stay at Newcastle United this summer – but the new Toon board are unwilling to match the Frenchman’s wage demands.

Saint-Maximin, 25, still has a contract at Newcastle until the summer of 2026. Valued at £50million, the ex-Nice attacker has gained interest from other Premier League clubs. 90Min says Everton and Wolves are interested.

The player is said to be requesting a new deal, one with a bigger wage in order to stay at Tyneside in the coming weeks and months. But the stance of the Newcastle board is that they are not going to give in to Saint-Maximin.

Indeed, he is on a contract until 2026 and do not necessarily need to. There has been reports suggesting that Saint-Maximin could even be sold. Jones gave his update to GMS, stating the stance of the new Newcastle board.

“He’s got four years left. He wants a pay rise, and thinks he’s the main man in that team, and he was, he was the talisman. But, Newcastle don’t really see it that way going forward, they’re not planning to meet his demands.”

Jones on Saint-Maximin: Newcastle board right to ignore demands?

It is a wise move from the new board. While Saint-Maximin is the club’s best player, there is no point handing him a new deal while his current one lasts until 2026. The Toon will be bringing in new players this summer.

It might be that Newcastle find better options in the market than Saint-Maximin, so why would they hand him a new contract? The Toon need to build this summer and if selling Saint-Maximin helps FFP, then so be it.
