Jamie Carragher has claimed that Luis Diaz is the first person in ‘four or five years’ to put Sadio Mane under ‘real pressure’ at Liverpool, as he told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (13/04/22 at 7:45 pm).
Even though Diaz has been in Liverpool colours for only a few months, it feels like he has been there as long as Mane because, as Carragher described, he has been a ‘revelation’.
For a very long time, one thing Jurgen Klopp couldn’t beat Manchester City at was the attacking depth in his squad compared to what Pep Guardiola could choose from.
But, fast forward to today, not only do the Reds have a better front three than their Premier League title rivals, but their squad depth in the final third is better.
Carragher was full of praise for Liverpool’s 25-year-old flyer and the impact he has had on the club.
“He’s come in and he is the first person who has ever put Sadio Mane, in the last four or five years, under real pressure for his position,” said Carragher.
“Sadio Mane has now, at times, moved to centre-forward because of the pressure from Diaz in that position.
“He has been a revelation since he has come in. He really has. It feels like to me that he has transformed Liverpool, where people are now looking at their squad and are saying ‘they have a great squad’.
“You have seen the goals he has scored already and how brave he has been.”
The same could be said for someone like Diogo Jota, who is now a regular member of Liverpool’s front three.
Previously, it was Roberto Firmino who would dance and fool the opposition in the final third, but Liverpool’s new goalscoring machine has now taken over.
Whilst Jota has replaced Firmino, it’s still going to take something special for Mane to join the Brazil superstar on the bench.
But, either way, this is serious depth Klopp can choose from, and as he proved against Benfica last night, he can rest some of his big hitters along with it.
