CalcioMercato report that Tanguy Ndombele will rejoin Tottenham in the summer after Lyon have decided not to renew his loan or activate the permanent clause included in his loan deal – which was worth £54million.
Ndombele, 25, rejoined Lyon on a loan-to-buy deal in the summer after falling down the pecking order at Tottenham since the arrival of Antonio Conte. The Italian prefers hard-working, defensive-minded midfielders.
It has seen Harry Winks get more of a chance under Conte than he did under Nuno Espirito Santo – and also saw Spurs buy Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus. The latter has since thrived in North London under Conte.
The Athletic report that a clause was inserted into Ndombele’s loan worth £54million. But after just one goal and two assists in 10 games for Lyon, the French side have chosen not to renew his loan or sign him permanently.
It means, the player – who left Eric Dier “furious” when he stormed down the tunnel after being substituted against Morecambe, according to Alasdair Gold – will return to Tottenham this summer. He has a contract until 2025.
Ndombele return: Tottenham man have future after Lyon decision?
While Conte is in charge of Tottenham, it seems unlikely that Ndombele will be a part of the Italian’s plans. The issue Spurs have with Ndombele, is that he cost the club a record fee – and Daniel Levy will have to accept a big loss.
Lyon were never likely to pay the £54million fee included in the deal – it is a figure that far exceeds anything French clubs can afford, other than PSG. If Levy will accept, say, half of that figure, then there might be some interest.
