Cristian Romero has admitted that Dejan Kulusevski has surprised him at Tottenham Hotspur.
The Sweden international joined Tottenham on the final day of the January transfer window.
Kulusevski originally joined Spurs on loan from Juventus but it’s looking certain that the Lilywhites will make it permanent this summer.
That’s because the 21-year-old already has three goals and six assists across 11 Premier League appearances.
For context, Kulusevski only managed one goal and three assists for 20 games in a Juventus shirt during the first half of the campaign.
Bizarrely, he wasn’t even Spurs’ first-choice, with deals for Adama Traore and Luis Diaz collapsing before they pursued Kulusevski.
However, he’s been a breath of fresh air at Tottenham and Romero has admitted that he didn’t expect him to be this good.
He told The Athletic: “The person who’s surprised me is Kulusevski because I think he’s really added something either we didn’t have or didn’t see so often. He’s a really bright, intelligent player who’s become a vital cog in our set-up.”
The key for Kulusevski is consistency.
He isn’t the first Tottenham player to have an initial honeymoon period after joining and then struggle from there on out.
Take Steven Bergwijn.
A debut goal against Manchester City set him up for a glittering career with the North Londoners. Fast forward two years and he almost left in January.
He is definitely surplus to requirements at Tottenham under Conte and Kulusevski must ensure that his standard never drops below a certain point.
