At the moment it looks like Dele Alli won’t be proving a point to Tottenham Hotspur.
The Lilywhites sold Alli to Everton on transfer deadline day in January.
But the 25-year-old is already out of favour under Toffees boss Frank Lampard and hasn’t even started a Premier League outing yet.
Alli, who joined Tottenham under Mauricio Pochettino, was an unused substitute in Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United.
And Jermaine Beckford has told Stadium Astro that he doesn’t even believe he’ll be at Goodison Park next season.
He said after the win, when asked if he’ll play a role in the 2022-23 campaign: “No. No I don’t. Dele Alli has had umpteen chances. He played under some incredible managers and once Poch left there were so many managers who gave him the opportunity. And the same thing happened again, his levels diminished and disappeared. For me that’s nothing to do with the football club. All of the managers he’s had have been incredible. The same problem keeps on arising and it’s him! He has got a problem.”
Tragic
It’s a heartbreaking prediction by Beckford – and even more so because he’s probably right.
It’s unbelievable that the same Alli who shone under Pochettino at Tottenham now cannot get a game for one of the worst Everton sides in decades, with Lampard’s side sitting 17th in the Premier League table before beating United on Saturday.
And Beckford is right – the problem is him.
Even toward the end of Pochettino’s reign the 25-year-old wasn’t playing like his usual self.
And when managers like Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte cannot find a way in which to get you back then, well, it’s relatively ominous.
It’s definitely a tragic decline but the good news is that if Alli is the main reason for his form, he can still salvage it at some point.
