Roma have identified Everton’s Andre Gomes as a potential replacement for Jordan Veretout as Premier League duo Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United target the Serie A star, according to AS Roma Live.

Now, forgive us for our ignorance, but what is it Andre Gomes actually does?

He no longer seems capable of controlling the tempo of a game from the heart of Everton’s midfield, after all.

And he’s certainly not a belligerent ball-winner either, snapping into tackles and harrying the opposition into submission.

Even the driving, Yaya Toure-esque bursts that became his trademark years ago at Valencia appear to be a thing of the very distant past. So, we’ll ask that question again; What is it Andre Gomes actually does?

It’s something regular attendees at Goodison Park may be wondering themselves. A Swiss Army Knife of a footballer who appears to have lost all of his functions.

There certainly won’t be a horde of tear-stained masses mourning his departure should Gomes leave Merseyside for Rome at the end of a fraught, fractured campaign on the blue side of Stanley Park.

Is Andre Gomes leaving Everton for Roma?

Giallorossi director Tiago Pinto is looking for players to succeed Jordan Veretout in Jose Mourinho’s midfield.

And, alongside Granit Xhaka, Everton’s £110,000-a-week enigma is one of the names on his radar as the France international edges ever closer to the exit.

Veretout, talented playmaker formerly of Aston Villa, may have played his final game for the Italian giants already.

The £12 million-rated midfielder, a summer target for Newcastle and Tottenham, has refused to extend his contract after Roma refused to meet his demands for a substantial pay rise to the tune of £100,000-a-week (Calciomercato and Roma Today).

It was a request, Corriere dello Sport say, that ‘deeply annoyed’ the Stadio Olimpico chiefs.

As a result, Mourinho could leave Veretout on the sidelines for the final six weeks of the season, even with Roma competing in the UEFA Conference League and pushing for a top four finish in Serie A.
