Tottenham Hotspur are now confident that West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone will be joining them on a free transfer this summer.

That’s according to a report from The Sun, who claim that Tottenham have real optimism that Johnstone will be arriving this summer.

Tottenham have allegedly held a long-term interest in signing Johnstone and now think a deal is on the cards.

Johnstone is out of contract this summer and has no intention of signing a new deal with the Baggies.

Southampton have been showing an interest in Johnstone but they have maybe signposted that the 29-year-old is North London-bound.

The Saints are allegedly looking at other goalkeeper targets, possibly believing that Johnstone will be heading to Tottenham.

Tottenham see Johnstone as backup to veteran stopper Hugo Lloris before potentially taking over in the future.

This will ultimately spell the end for Pierluigi Gollini, who is currently on loan at Tottenham from Atalanta.

Gollini hasn’t played a single Premier League game this season and Tottenham won’t be looking to keep the Italian any longer.

That does though show the risk Johnstone will be taking.

Lloris may be 35 but he is clearly Tottenham’s first-choice goalkeeper and Johnstone may spend most of his time sat on the bench, just like Gollini.

Johnstone, branded ‘outstanding’ by Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle, has endured a mixed season with West Brom amid questions over his future.

Johnstone, an England international, did though shine in the Premier League last season and may be desperate to return to the top flight.

Tottenham look willing to strike the deal, believing that Johnstone is a low-risk option given his free agent status.

Fabio Paratici loved a free transfer at Juventus and it now looks like he’s seen to secure his first for Tottenham.
