Fabrizio Romano reports that Villarreal will open talks with Tottenham over extending Giovani Lo Celso’s loan in the summer. The 25-year-old starred for the Spanish side in the Champions League against Bayern.
Lo Celso joined Villarreal in January after managing just two Premier League starts for Tottenham in the first half of the season. He is on loan until the summer, though the temporary move does not include a clause.
Since then, he has become a crucial part of Unai Emery’s side. Going into Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final clash against Bayern Munich, Lo Celso had played 10 times – though yet to score or lay on an assist.
While that run has continued after Wednesday, he was excellent in his side’s 1-0 win over Bayern – and picked up the man-of-the-match award. Romano has given an update on his future ahead of the summer window.
Romano on Lo Celso: Tottenham need to cash in as soon as possible
While Lo Celso is showing Tottenham what he is capable of at Villarreal, it is back in Spain where he sparkled for Real Betis. It is clear Lo Celso could not handle English football – and Spurs need to rake in a fee for his services.
Romano’s update suggests Villarreal will request another loan. But Spurs should really be looking to sell. If it is to Villarreal, then a sizeable loan fee and a hefty permanent clause must be included to sign him in 2023.
